All about Anime in the North

Last year for Anime North 2017 I had a BLAST meeting my fellow (original old school generation) Pokemon lovers! I was so busy with the convention and working and starting to get side projects together that I forgot to post about this shortly after it happened - I'm sorry!
So this post is a catch-up from last year.. and my next post will be a first look at my plans for this year!

My cosplay of choice was a Houndoom Gijinka (a.k.a "Moe anthropomorphism or Moe gijinka; where qualities are given to non-human beings, objects, concepts, or phenomena.) Some of you may remember seeing my teaser posts online about my costume in progress! I had alot of run listening to all of you guess which Pokemon I was going to be.

Houndoom has always been one of my favourite Pokemon (mostly because I LOVE Dobermans so much) it was kind of a crunch to decide what to wear for the weekend so I went with something more versatile & casual than complicated. I've always had a BIG deep love of theatre & costuming (mostly anything artistic and 'craftey' in general) and as I grew older costuming turned into cosplay.

Everything was hand measured, cut & stitched - I was especially proud of my tail, which lasted Friday until Saturday night before the inner wire cracked. But it was able to stand and sway all on its own attached to a belt I wore. If I had more time I would've loved to make a full mask/cowel or even a headpiece and paws.. maybe this year, haha!

I met alot of amazing cosplayers & coworkers, saw some great performances by Nagata Shachu (formerly Kiyoshi Nagata Ensemble) and Illuminair Entertainment along with attending some great workshops on cosplay building!

I met Spider_Seebs and Toronto_Dadpool along with the Symbiote_Spidey (it took me all 3 days to hunt them down, haha.) I was very excited to meet some of my fellow Pokemon who I had communicated with prior to the convention. It was a challenge finding them all because we were all running around looking for eachother!? But I met an awesome Charizard, the cutest Cubone, alot of great Pikachu, the best Solgaleo I've ever met (we kept texting back and forth trying to find each other,) James with his head stuck in a Wheezing and an amazing Steampunk version of Absol just to list a few!? I also met the coolest Kaneki Ken, a minion and lots of furries everywhere!

Here are some of my pictures from the convention, and please Click Here to find my album, it will also be updated with this years pictures too!

I would have to say my favourite memory from last year's Anime North though, (besides the great pool I got to relax in after everyday) was walking across my hotel parking lot (feeling like the amazing Houdoom that I am) and hearing a little girl scream and yell "OH MY GOD DAD! Is that Houndoom!?" When I looked it was a 12 year old Pikachu with her dad dressed as Scar from Full Metal Alchemist. I waved at both of them and we took some pictures together. I'm pretty sure I made her entire year lol her smile was worth everything I went through.

If you have any ideas that I should cosplay at the next Anime North, Fan Expo, Kingston Comic con or anyother event, please comment below!

Oh well.. Karma's a challenge?

My first new video of 2018 woo! It's small but it's a start to alot more ideas that I have for the year, so I hope it makes you all smile/laugh.. Here we go!

There is a video meme going around Instagram (and probably other social media) that has started in China called #Karmasabitch The challenge is to post a video of you transforming to the song Antique Gucci - Cryptex with the sample clip of Veronica from Netflix's Riverdale series saying "Oh well.. Karma's a bitch".

BuzzFeed posted their own explanation and version of the challenge on Youtube as well. You can watch it here. I think this is a great way to show someone's creativity, cosmetology skills, or sense of humour. It's been great watching so many videos from all over the world. Not only are woman and men having fun with these videos, but pairs of sisters, best friends, brothers, groups of friends and even cosplayers!

It's a good way to remind people no longer in your life what you've lost, or remind the ones in your life how awesome (or funny) you are! Mine is not only dedicated to the awesome people world-wide that are killing this challenge.. BUT also the losers I've loved, lost & gave up on! Miss me now huh? lol Click here (or the picture) to go to the video!

You can find Antique Gucci here and the Veronica Riverdale scene here. Here is a link to a "karmasabitch" search I did on Youtube so you can watch more videos! I hope more of my family, friends & supporters can get in on this little bit of fun!

In MY opinion.. Some food is Rotten?

One of the newest series on Netflix is: ROTTEN a discussion series that focuses on food production, imports/export history, falsification, trends and more. Each episode discusses a different food from chicken to honey to garlic...etc. I first heard of the series because ALLERGIC LIVING posted an article about one of the episodes.
The episode that has recently sparked interest is "The Peanut Problem." It starts off describing (or some would say accusing) the recent plummet in peanut (and tree-nut because YES they are different) sales due to the increasing rise of people with food-based allergies. They also are quick to show some people's opinion that allergies have only began over the past several years.. which in my opinion IS completely WRONG!

First of all, there has always been allergies, there has always been viruses and diseases - the thing people don't think about while they are complaining is that have we ALWAYS known what they were? NO! Have we always known what to call them or how to cure them? NO!

I may not be a scientist but I can assure you things like Chickenpox or the Flu or even minor/major allergic reactions have been around FAR MORE than just the recent years they have increased. Way back in the 1600's or even the 1300's way before modern medical technology I'm sure they had illnesses..etc that people would suffer and die from. But back then they probably didn't label or call them anything other than a plague or the work of God(s). Back then people didn't talk and research about the things that killed them to the extent that we do now. I'm sure even back in our parents day there WERE people who had food (or any other type of trigger) based allergies but they possible assumed the symptoms were a cold, or the flu, or just a 24 hour bug they caught from someone else.. It's true the rise of fatal allergies is quite alarming, and I'm sure over the past several years most allergies were not as fatal.
So yes I do personally believe something is happening in our food or biology that is making allergies more severe. But no I do not believe that they have just magically shown up in the past 40 years to mock and torture anyone in the food & farming industries.

Although the episode does spend a great deal of time talking about some incidental deaths in the UK caused by negligent/ignorant restaurant owners who CLEARLY used peanuts & tree nuts in their food but told customers otherwise, I think people are missing the bigger point of why they mentioned it in the episode in the first place..
“If you don’t know what’s in your food, get out of the business – today,” - Chef Ming Tsai, American restaurateur, television personality, and celebrity chef.
Tsai is completely right! If you cannot take the time to care for the people you are responsible for serving, if you cannot take the time to properly know what is in the food you are serving - and make sure your staff do also.. YOU DO NOT DESERVE NOR SHOULD YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE ANY TYPE OF FOOD SERVING ESTABLISHMENT! The same way that venues are responsible as the last point of contact for someone drunk when they leave, you are responsible for the food you serve.
This also emphasizes a point I make constantly that people are ignorant or lazy to the fact peanuts ARE in a different family than tree nuts. They think people that are allergic to peanuts are fine to eat tree nuts or vise-versa. So it must be fine to just tell them there are no peanuts in the food, even though there are tree nuts (or again vise-versa.) This is NOT always the case!? Some people are allergic to peanuts, some tree nuts, SOME ARE ALLERGIC TO BOTH! Some people stay away from ALL NUTS because they do not want to risk their life in order to eat a pine nut but not a cashew.

My point being, if you can take the time and commitment to open a restaurant in the first place, you can take the time to protect the people who are trusting you to serve them. It is NOT anyone's fault that they are born or grow into a food-based allergy. It is NOT the family's fault that for once they want to take their children out to dinner to feel like a normal average party of society when all they do is read ingredients lists and hide at home because they feel no one is considerate or cares enough about food allergies. I cannot keep track of how many restaurants or cafe's I have been to and had to leave because the servers or cooks when asked about the oils they cook with, or if they have cross-contamination with ANY nut products say "I don't know."

Tsai points out that it is very easy to make your information known for employees AND customers; all you need is a binder or book with a chart of the most known allergens, list all your food products and simply check of the boxes of what contains what. SIMPLE! Everyone can refer to the book! I can't tell you how many times I have been told "I'm sorry I don't know BUT please hold on while I get the book, if you don't mind looking through it." OF COURSE I don't mind! That shows that even if they don't know my answers they know enough to let me look through the book and make a decision based on my own comfort level. GOOD SERVICE!

There are other points I could talk about from the episode, but I'd rather not turn my blog into an essay (haha) but I will make this a two-part post and cover more of my opinions. In the meantime you can click here to read the ALLERGIC LIVING article. And please comment if you'd like me to discuss my opinion on the other episodes, or any other allergy trend/topics right now.

New Heroes in town!

Previously I made a post about my updated plans for 2018 on my blog, I introduced you to some new blogs & video ideas and also my new business! Today I wanted to officially give a proper welcome (and explanation) to PROheros [of Kingston] Cosplay Entertainment!

PROheros is a cosplay (costume) entertainment service business. Looking for Black Panther to sing 'happy birthday' to your son? Or Catwoman to take pictures at your high school graduation? PROheros wants to service all kinds of events, such as birthday parties, public festivals and even hospital or private care visits! With every booking partial proceeds will be given to local charity - every time!

"I've called Kingston my home for so many years now that I decided to give back to the community. And ever since I started dressing up for Spirit Halloween and having a party for the children at CHEO (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario) every year I figured "why can't someone start this in Kingston too?" - Jessica Dunning, CEO
I've always been passionate about dramatic arts and her community. It's been my dream to one-day combine both of those passions into not just a job but a life long career that could benefit many! With over 13+ years of Musical Theatre experience and an 8+ month internship at Walt Disney World (working as a Creative Costuming hostess,) I hope to be able to inspire and entertain with the encouragement that anyone can be a hero - no matter how old, young, race or religion! There are various different forms of superheroes in our comic books, manga, anime, video games and storybooks that aren't just the cookie cutter norm.

Every Wednesday PROheros posts a different multicultural superheroine (supporting more female heroes) picked at random! We would love to hear more suggestions for our feature posts! They can be anywhere from comic books, mythology, videogames or more..

It's been a blast inviting the new Kingston Spiderwoman to come to town, she has had a great welcome into the community and has already helped Kingston General Hospital and the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada! I've also heard she may have 2 new friends coming to Kingston, here's a hint.. did you know that Spiderwoman likes "Bats" and "Ants?" As our business continues to grow we can't wait to invite more superheroes to come to Kingston!

You can follow my newest (and biggest) adventures on Facebook @PROherosKingston and also Instagram @proheroskingston to learn about many multicultural superheroes around the world, and my ever growing group of superhero (and cosplay) friends!

I'd like to personally thanks everyone who has already supported and helped my most ambitious business! Do you have a picture with any of our characters? Please tag us and use our hashtags so that we can give you a shoutout & thank you!

*PROheros [of Kingston] does not claim to represent authentic Marvel, DC Comics, or any other fictional character(s).*

What's taken so long!?

Okay so 2017 was kind of lacking in my blogging - I apologize! After removing a lot of toxic people & situations out of my life (and finding more positively fantastic ones instead), a lot of business hunting and side projects established it's time to get back on this for real! So whats been going on?

I have footage for about 5 other videos that I badly need to get done, I did buy myself new video editing software (Happy Birthday & Merry Christmas to myself) so I promise they will be on my Youtube throughout 2018. Some of my ideas are as follows:
- How to survive house parties
- Dancing 101: Michael Jackson moves
- When He leaves His first shirt at your house
- Dancing 101: How to K-pop
- When your roommates aren't home
- Dancing 101: Charlie Brown moves (saving for Christmas/New Years sorry!)
- Porter by Scroobius Pip (stop-motion cover)
- A day in the life of #KingstonSpiderwoman?
- "The Weatherman" a special movie production by my best friend and I - loosely based on a true story of one of my exes (haha)

Speaking of exes.. I have a new blog series to start, again purely comedic and loosely based on true events in my dating struggles (thank God that's over now!) Along with helping my one of my best friends officially launch her own business.. LadyWOLF Creations!

But on top of all of my video & blogging inspiration, has been my biggest pride & joy.. the launch of my Superhero for hire business.. PROheros [of Kingston] Cosplay Entertainment! Servicing the ygk area for costumed character parties, fundraisers, public events, hospital visits & private photoshoots!

I've called Kingston my home for so many years now that I decided to give back to the community. And ever since I started dressing up for Spirit Halloween and having a party for the children at CHEO (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario) every year I figured "why can't someone start this in Kingston too?" SO I did! Please stay tuned to learn more!

Are there any other ideas you have for funny or informational blogs & videos you'd like to see? Or any superheroes you'd like me to invite next? Please comment your thoughts!
